States and communities are also developing educational strategies to alert consumers to the risks of mixing alcohol with energy drinks and CALs (Caffeinated Alcoholic Beverages). One community has enacted an ordinance requiring retailers to post signs warning of the risks of CALs. Effective population-based strategies for preventing excessive alcohol consumption and related harms should be implemented, including increasing alcohol excise taxes, limiting alcohol outlet density, and maintaining existing restrictions on days of sale.
In the case of driving, each alcoholic drink increases impairment more for adolescents than adults.
Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a serious medical situation that includes four symptoms: Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Loss of control: The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to "get high."
Based on current research done by the American Heart Association, one or two alcoholic drinks per day are associated with the reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
