Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a serious medical situation that includes four symptoms: Craving: A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Loss of control: The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, occur when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: The need to drink greater amounts of alcohol in order to "get high."
Very large amounts of alcohol (such as a quart if drunk in five to thirty minutes) may occasionally cause death by anesthetizing the brain center that controls breathing.
In 1933, prohibition was overturned by the 18th amendment, however, many states chose to remain dry and it would be 30 years until all states allowed alcohol sales again.
The record number of binge drinking deaths involving college students has highlighted the need for universities to be able to find ways to reduce the out-of-control drinking practices that so are such a part of the fabric on college campuses today.
