  • Cocaine problems are often masked by alcohol problems, and many people who are admitted to treatment centers for alcoholism are actually involved in one or more other drugs.
  • Research has shown that children from alcoholic families report higher levels of depression and anxiety and exhibit more symptoms of generalized stress (i.e., low self-esteem) than do children from nonalcoholic families.
  • Alcoholics may experience damage to their brain, higher blood pressure, nerve damage, heart muscle damage, pancreatitis, erectile dysfunction (men), birth defects in children, fetal alcohol syndrome (women), depression, bleeding of the esophagus and increased risk for cancer.
  • Alcohol intoxication can result in risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, and increased risk of sexual assault. These behaviors can result in unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
