  • Excessive alcohol use has immediate effects that increase the risk of many harmful health conditions. These immediate effects are most often the result of binge drinking and include the following: Risky sexual behaviors, including unprotected sex, sex with multiple partners, and increased risk of sexual assault. These behaviors can result in unintended pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases.
  • Alcohol can make you sleepy, drowsy, or lightheaded. Consuming alcohol while taking medicines can intensify these effects.
  • According to the National Household Survey on Drug Use and Health and the College Alcohol Study, among college students that were between the ages of 18-24, alcohol-related unintentional injury deaths increased 3% per 100,000 from 1,440 in 1998 to 1,825 in 2005.
  • After an individual consumes three or four drinks, their judgment and attention span is somewhat impaired and their ability to drive safely will be limited; this is due to the impairment of their sensory-motor skills.
