- There are some alcoholics that may be aware that their drinking is problematic. They may have tried to quit on their own but have failed at their attempts. Unfortunately, many alcoholics will suffer from feelings of hopelessness and depression due to their inability to quick drinking on their own.
- A blackout is an amnesia-like state that is often related to a period of heavy drinking; an individual may appear to be functioning normally in this state, but later, they will have no memory of the occurrences.
- In 2009, the reported that 37% of 8th graders and 72% of 12th graders had tried alcohol, and 15% of 8th graders and 44% of 12th graders drank during the past month.
- Substance abuse treatment is a much better alternative than incarceration; a high percentage of long term alcoholics may eventually have problems with law enforcement.
